Several years ago a challenge was given to technology instructor Rick A. Morelan. Take downsized workers with little or no experience with computers or technology and turn them into industry certified technology experts. The proven material from this venture is now available to you as the Joes 2 Pros series of books and videos. This new approach has vivid pictures on almost every page that shows what you should see on your computer screen as you work through the material, and downloadable content, home practice labs, software, and fun review games available from the joes2pros web site. Starting with the basic lesson "What is a Database? " this book helps beginners get comfortable with the SQL language. From there, you will walk step-by-step through the basics. 'Beginning SQL Joes 2 Pros' is the second edition of the popular 'T-SQL Joes 2 Pros' with updated content and a lower price. The language examples in this book can be used with any standard SQL engine. Regardless of your skill level, you too can evolve from "Joe" to "Pro" by following the steps outlined in this book.

After taking on a new position at work, I was forced to start learning SQL. I was not overly enthusiatic about this as I had heard many negative comments about trying to learn SQL - most recommended I sign up for a class but I didn't have hundreds of dollars to invest. After doing a bit of research, I purchased Beginning SQL Joes 2 Pros: The SQL Hands-On Guide for Beginners (SQL Exam Prep Series 70-433 Volume 1 of 5) (Sql Design Series). I also purchased SQL Svr Developer Edtn 2008 R2 32-bit/x64 IA64 English DVD as recommended in the book. I am so glad I did!
The book is organized in a easy to follow format. The corresponding labs (free download from Joes 2 Pros website) affirm my understanding of the concepts. The videos from the Joes 2 Pros website help when I need further explaination. I whole-heartedly recommend this book for anyone learning SQL - even novices like me! I would also suggest you visit the website and take the placement quiz to establish which book (there are five volumes) is right for you. You won't be disappointed with the content or the excellent customer support offered by Rick Morelan!

Beginning SQL Joes 2 Pros The SQL HandsOn Guide for Beginners eBook Rick Morelan Pinal Dave Reviews

I purchased this book with high hopes, but I went on the website to see the videos and you have to pay a HUGE fee to even view them. I'm sure at one point this information was free and it changed, but this should be pointed out before a person purchases this book. This is blatant dishonesty. I understand you want to charge more, but it needs to to be pointed out ahead of time. Maybe when registering on the website you could have a section for order code that they could type in and if it checks out then they have access.

Probably was a great book, but not getting it now.
I decided to purchase this book because I needed a low cost option to learn SQL. I had looked into a few options for free online but they left alot to be desired. This book worked like a charm. It helped me go from knowing almost nothing about SQL to understanding the underlying concepts as well as how to write basic SQL queries. The book uses a step by step approach to teach the very basic types of SQL queries and then build upon those by utilizing more advanced techniques. There are never large leaps in between one chapter to the next and I felt very comfortable with each emerging topic. The book never gets into anything very advanced as this volume only covers the basics. Each section contains learning exercises and a skills quiz at the end. These serve to reinforce what has been covered in each section. The book never felt overwhelming and was easy to follow along with.

I would recommend this book for anyone that is trying to learn basic SQL or is just starting out with this programming language. I used the book in preparation (and volume 2) in preparation for a job interview and I was able to get the job in no small part to the lessons I learned through this book as well as the 2nd volume.
I've been creating web sites and small programs for quite a while.

*Hint If you ever want to build web sites or programs, make sql your first language.

If you want to go beyond your basic blog and create something more sophisticated, you really need to learn sql. For instance, how do you create a parametrized query that gets filled by a drop down list populated by a related look-up table? Sounds complicated (and, at first, it is). This series explains the sql language better than any I have ever encountered. Download the edition and use two monitors. This makes it really easy to read on one and do the terrific labs using ssms and/or visual studio on the other.

Rick and his friends write their books like a well structured classroom.

This is the best money I've spent on technical books. I downloaded all five (including the one on c#)and look forward to finishing them all.

My wife has been programming (Cobol anyone?) and doing database development for nearly 40 years and was really impressed with this series.

I found out that Rick lives only a few miles from me and teaches nearby. I might just look him up.
I am still working through this book, but I wanted to share my insights on the book thus far. What strikes me most about the author, Rick Morelan, is that he is down to earth (refreshing) in his teaching approach and presentation, and places a high value on his students' (readers) time. He wastes absolutely no time jumping right into some extremely practical examples of how SQL works. He follows up lessons with practical labs/exercises, which help solidify one's understanding of new material. This method works really well with my learning style. As a sidenote, I realize there is more to SQL than what is presented, but the author's intention is not to cover every aspect of SQL. However, the core nuts and bolts that are in this book definitely help start the learning flywheel. I have another SQL book, but it was a bit over my head as a beginner. At this early stage, I needn't be bogged down in trivial aspects of SQL, but rather the core fundamentals, which are clearly explained in this book.

Important knowledge is presented in a succinct but very illuminating fashion. The labs/exercises help to solidify the new knowledge. I also have the accompanying DVD (sold separately, but worth it if you are a visual learner) to this book, and it marries up nicely with the book. On the whole, just seeing the birds eye view of how SQL operates and how things fit together will be a good platform for launching into more advanced topics, or diving deeper into topics already covered.

I am a one-man IT department, but to date have very little knowledge of SQL and SQL Server (not my responsibility, but I am quite interested, thus my purchase of this book!). I have been fairly intimidated about learning SQL Server, especially about where to begin and where to turn for reliable and helpful beginner's information (since there are so many options out there!). I am glad I selected this series. I have a good feeling Mr. Morelan's resources will save me a lot of time ... and money ... as I continue forward with his series! Well done to the authors!
